Calmont Flexibility Test
Flexibility of a wire or cable can be measured several ways: Tinius-Olsen Test, Flex “Cycle” Test, or the Calmont Flex Test. The Tinius-Olsen Test and the Flex “Cycle” Test require expensive, special equipment. However, the Calmont Flex Test can be performed using materials that are readily available. The Calmont Flex Test produces a value which is relative. It’s only useful if compared to another value.
Materials needed for test:
6 foot piece of cable you want to test
Flat table that’s at least 30” off the ground
Measuring device
Procedure:
Hang 30” of the cable off the side of the table (42” on the table)
6” from the top of the table measure the distance from the table to the cable
12” from the top of the table measure the distance from the table to the cable
Take the average of the two measurements = “flex value”
