Sterilization

Insulation and jacket materials must be able to withstand the sterilization process. It is important to understand what type of sterilization the wire or cable will undergo. Discuss the sterilization with your cable manufacture when designing a cable in order to choose the correct materials. Types of sterilization include:

  • Wet/steam sterilization (Autoclave)
  • Dry heat sterilization
  • Ethylene oxide
  • Sporicidal chemicals
  • Glass Plasma
  • Irradiation (Gamma rays)

Biocompatibility

Custom cables can be manufactured with medical-grade materials. Different grades are available for different types of use. Knowing the extent of patient contact is important. Calmont’s engineers can assist you with determining which medical grade materials are needed for your application.

Flexibility

The cable should bend, twist, and flex without impeding the user.

Flex Life

The cable should be able to withstand multiple bend cycles for applications with extended use.

Disposable and Reusable Cables

By definition, disposable cables are intended for one time or limited use. Minimizing cost, while performing its intended function is of primary importance. PVC and PE are the insulations most commonly used. Shields when needed are spiral or aluminized Mylar. Reusable medical cables are built to endure constant flexing and extended cycles of sterilization. Using Teflon®, TPE or silicone rubber with TPR or silicone jackets are commonly used for these types of applications.
